"Our experienced team understand traditional construction techniques and the importance of using the correct building materials."

Why traditional materials matter

Differences in construction and materials affect how a property manages moisture.

Cement & modern mortars

  • Vapour impermeable — traps moisture
  • Sets harder than the substrate
  • Inflexible — forms cracks

Hot-lime mortar

  • Vapour permeable — allows moisture movement
  • Less dense than the substrate
  • Flexible — reduced cracking

County Treasure in the Vale of Glamorgan: the entire top section of stonework, including the crenellations, was disassembled after recording the stone placement of the folly, then precisely rebuilt. All cementitious mortar was removed externally and internally. The stonework cleaned and consolidated, with the structural integrity of the hollow sections of the walls addressed using an injected liquid lime void filler before pointing with lime. The existing openings were glazed and further enhanced with new internal oak lintels and repaired stone cills.

Existing dilapidated chimney reconstructed with reclaimed bricks and recycled stone.

Consolidation of stonework to medieval inglenook fireplaces and repointing with coarse lime.

Lime Mortar & Pointing

Specialist lime mortars are provided bespoke to suit your building. We predominantly use hot-lime without pozzolans, which dates back to Roman times. The unique composition of hot-lime promotes flexibility and moisture management. The free lime reacts with carbon dioxide over time, to heal small hairline cracks naturally.

Existing Edwardian chimney completely rebuilt, pointed and flaunched with lime mortar.

Reviews

A few words from people we've worked with and for.

Having run a wide range of projects and worked with many plasters, I have found MD Plasters to be very professional in their approach, their wide range of knowledge, and the care taken with the grade 2 listed building they have worked on as part of our team. Their attention to detail is truly commendable, and they consistently deliver high-quality craftsmanship.

Stephen DeanContracts Manager, Eden London UK Ltd

Martin and his team removed an old concrete hearth, laid beautiful stone, and re-rendered the inside of the fireplace. It looks perfect, I'm more than pleased with the result. The care and attention to detail really show; true craftsmanship. They were also polite, friendly, and punctual throughout. I would highly recommend.

Tina RamsbottomCapel Llanilltern

We are so pleased with the work that Martin and his team have done on our new cottage that was build in 1699. The level of expertise and care taken was second to none. Martin is extremely knowledgeable and passionate and was able to advise us on structure and aesthetics throughout the work.

Jane and DirkLlantwit Major

I worked with Martin and Dai on a Grade 2* listed school refurbishment that included a variety of different, challenging conditions utilising lime plaster and included the remodelling of mullions, transoms, sills and heads around new and refurbished tracery windows. MD Plastering's expertise, care and attention to detail was exceptional throughout. I have no hesitation in recommending their services and look forward to working with them again in the future.

Paul Cannon, RIBABristol
